I am always wondering about this question and it never was answered. but i now the answer now they are caused my drinking or eating to fast or maybe just by gas. i dont know if this is the answer or not you can look for more information on the NASA website.

A hiccup happens when your diaphragm ( that's the chest muscle) has a spasm. The diaphragm is the muscle that pushes your chest in and out. So when it has a spasm, you let out a little air and there you have a hiccup!

Well i believe that we get hickups beacuse we loose the way we normally breath which means we have started to breath a different way then we usally do.
